Short, specific, and about the parts of a Malaysian move that actually go wrong: notice periods, lift bookings, and quotes that grow on the day.
The moving countdown
Work backwards from your date. Most of what goes wrong on moving day was decided four weeks earlier.
Six to eight weeks out
- Check your tenancy agreement for the notice period. One month is the common minimum in Malaysia, two is not unusual, and giving it late costs you a month of rent.
- Fix your moving date around building access, not around the mover. Condo lift bookings and office goods-lift permits are the real constraint.
- Walk every room and write an inventory. This one list is what makes quotes comparable.
Four weeks out
- Call three movers with the same inventory. Ask each what is excluded.
- Get every quote in writing — WhatsApp counts, a verbal figure does not.
- Decide how much packing you are doing yourself, and book materials if you are.
- Start giving things away. You pay to move volume, so volume you do not want is money.
Two weeks out
- Confirm the booking and the arrival window in writing.
- Submit the move-in and move-out forms to both building managements and pay any deposits.
- Arrange transfers or disconnections: electricity, water, internet, Astro, insurance address.
- Update your address with the bank, your employer, and anywhere a physical letter matters.
- Pack the rooms you barely use. Label by destination room, not by contents.
The last few days
- Pack a first-night box: bedding, towels, chargers, a change of clothes, basic tools, medication, kettle. Carry it yourself.
- Empty and defrost the fridge at least twenty-four hours before.
- Photograph the meter readings and the condition of the empty unit before you hand back keys.
- Keep documents, jewellery, laptops and keys with you, not on the lorry.
Moving day
- Be there at the start. Walk the crew through the inventory and flag the fragile items yourself.
- Check the quote against what is actually happening before the lorry is loaded, not after.
- Do a final sweep of every cupboard, the balcony, the store room and the water heater cabinet.
- At the new place, check the count and inspect for damage before the crew leaves and before you pay the balance.
Notice periods that catch people out
These are typical Malaysian lead times, not rules. Your tenancy agreement and your building management are the authority — check both early, because two of these can move your date.

How to brief a mover so the quote holds
Nearly every “the price went up on the day” story starts with a vague brief. A mover quoting a “three-bedroom condo” is guessing at your volume. Give them five things instead and the number tends to stick:
- The item list. Beds and their sizes, wardrobes, fridge, washing machine, sofa, dining set, and a rough box count.
- The oversized things. Piano, safe, treadmill, aquarium, three-door fridge, anything that needs four people or a dismantle.
- Access at both ends. Floor number, lift or stairs, how far the lorry can park from the door.
- Your access window. If building management only allows moves between 9am and 5pm on a weekday, say so on the first call.
- Who is packing. All of it, some of it, or none of it.
Then ask the one question that separates a quote from an estimate:what would make this price change on the day? A straight answer to that is worth more than a low number.
What we don’t publish
We don’t publish price tables. Moving quotes in Malaysia swing on volume, access, floor and timing, and a headline “from RM” figure would mislead more people than it helped. The honest version is the method above: same inventory, three calls, all three in writing.
